Integrity, Respect, Professionalism, and Unity.
ASO’s primary function is the safe and secure operation of the Adult Detention Center (ADC), and all new deputies begin their careers at the ADC. To effectively instill a culture emphasizing corrections, deputy recruits attend a 10-week Basic Deputy School during their first year, where they are trained in jail operations, court security, emergency vehicle operations, and firearms. Upon successful completion of Deputy School, as well as Field Training and New Employee Training, our deputies are full deputy sheriffs and state-certified in corrections, court security, and civil process.
These deputies will later attend the Basic Law Enforcement School at the academy within three years after they are hired, provided they are performing their duties satisfactorily and staffing is adequate. Once they complete Basic Law Enforcement School and the required hours of Field Training in patrol, they will be state-certified as law enforcement officers.
Deputy Sheriffs are eligible to apply for specialized positions when vacancy announcements exist, when they have two years of unbroken service, and satisfactory performance ratings on their annual evaluation. These specialized positions may exist in the Administrative Services Bureau, Detention Center Bureau, or Judicial & Field Operations Bureau.
