What are the age requirements to join?

Age: Must be at least 20 years old by the time of hire.

Are there things that could disqualify me from a job as a Deputy Sheriff?

The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office has determined that there are some past and present behavior(s) which may make some applicants not desirable for employment because they do not meet the high standards of the Office.

Applicants who have past or current behavior(s) as listed below may not be considered for employment.

  • Alcohol Use – current alcohol abuse is prohibited. Alcohol abuse is excessive drinking which impairs personal and work performance.
  • Drug Use – current or recent use of illegal drugs or abuse of any legal drugs is prohibited. Any pattern of illegal drug use that indicates an ongoing, regular, or recreational illegal use of a controlled substance, is disqualifying. Legal drug use is defined as medically prescribed drugs or drugs bought over the counter. Illegal drug use is defined as non-medically prescribed use of any drug.
  • Felony Criminal Activity – any conviction of a felony and the commission of a serious detected or undetected felony.
  • Domestic Violence – any conviction of a crime involving domestic violence.
  • Controlled Substance – as an adult, the selling, production or financing the production, sale or distribution of illegal controlled substances, or the obtaining of such substances through illegal use of a prescription(s).
  • Traffic/Driving – inability to be insured to drive a motor vehicle, failure to possess a valid driver’s license, and inability to be licensed to drive a motor vehicle.
  • Government – membership or participation in any organization advocating the violent overthrow of the government of the United States.
  • Discrepancies – misrepresentation, misinformation, misleading, inaccurate, untruthful or distorted information provided on the Background Questionnaire or during any part of the selection process.
  • Appointments – failure to keep an appointment at any step of the hiring process without the prior approval of the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Change of locator information – failure to notify the Office of a change in current address and/or telephone number.
  • Other – behavior(s) which do not necessarily reach the level of severity of the disqualifiers listed above — but may still be a basis for rejection after consideration of each case on its individual merits.
 
 
What are the physical requirements to become a Deputy Sheriff?

Below are a few of the physical requirements; additional information is available upon request:

Eyesight:

  • Far visual acuity: 20/20 binocular corrected with contact lenses or spectacles.
  • Monocular visual acuity: No worse than 20/40 corrected.
  • Monocular vision and color blindness are disqualifying.

Hearing: 

  • normal with no use of hearing aid

Blood Pressure:

  • resting blood pressure less than 140/90
How long is the hiring process?

The selection process takes approximately two to four months and is designed to determine the applicant’s integrity, truthfulness and ability to perform the duties of a Deputy Sheriff.

What is the starting salary?

Starting salary is based on education and experience. Base salary starts at $61,375.

Will I be compensated for my college degree(s)?

Yes. Education is also recognized through our career development program.

Will I be compensated for my prior military experience?

Yes. Military experience is also recognized through our career development program.

I am a current Police Officer/Deputy Sheriff. Will I be compensated for my prior law enforcement experience?

Yes. Virginia DCJS Jail and Law Enforcement Certifications start at $67,667 with a $10,000 hiring bonus for those with jail officer certifications.

I am a DCJS certified Officer/Deputy. Will I have to complete a background investigation?

Yes.

As an out-of-state applicant, how many trips will I be expected to make during the hiring process?

Three; the assessment center is held at ASO, polygraph is conducted at ASO, psychological examination is remote, and medical evaluation is done at Inova.

What are the steps in the hiring process?

What shifts will I work?

Most deputies once certified and train will start on the night shift. Shifts are 0600-1830 or 1800-0630 with a rotating schedule of 15 days a month.

What type of retirement do you have?

Virginia Retirement System and City of Alexandria Supplemental Retirement.

Do I have to pay for my equipment or training?

During inital hire, a contract will be presented to you for a committment to the Office for two years upon completion of an academy. If the contract is not completed, you will have to compensate the Office for training as it is a substantial investment for city taxpayers (approximately $27,000). You will have to purchase workout attire while in the academy and footwear. All other unform and equipment items will be provided to you upon hire.

How are new deputies trained once they’re hired?

Deputy Sheriffs will complete New Employee Training before attending Basic Deputy School at a regional criminal justice academy.

What are your residency requirements?

We do not have any residency requirements.

Do you have tuition assistance?

Deputy Sheriffs may be eligible to earn college credit hours upon completion of academy training. Deputy Sheriffs are encouraged to pursue a college degree and career development opportunities, and the City of Alexandria does have a tuition assistance program.

Can I work overtime?

Absolutely. There are opporutnies to shifts, details, events, or special assignments.

What about mandatory overtime?

We do not have mandatory overtime at this time. However, all sworn deputy sheriffs are essential personnel and report during emergencies.

What does a typical day look like for a deputy in this facility?
What is the deputy-to-inmate ratio, and how does that affect safety and workflow?

This all depends on the housing unit and population. Typically there are at least two deputies assigned to a post unless it is a specialized assignment.

How do deputies transition from working in the jail to becoming patrol officers, if that’s an option?

The primary functions of the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office are the jail and courthouse. We are the secondary law enforcement agency in the city. We have no designated law enforcement positions.

Is there ongoing training or continuing education provided or required?

Yes. We believe in the continuity of training. Every other year, deputy sheriffs are requred to receive legal, career, and cultural diversity training to maintain their certifications. Supervisors are requried to receive 40 hours of training upon promotion and 24 hours every year after.
